Modern Foreign Languages Team

The Modern Foreign Languages team are:

Miss R Wellfair – Head of MFL

Mrs J Labelle-Moise – Teacher of French and Spanish

At Stanchester our students will study French or Spanish at KS3, with the opportunity to further develop their learning into KS4 and even take on a additional second language at GCSE. There are also extra-curricular opportunities to learn Italian with our lunchtime Italian club, run by our native-speaker students. We also run the popular Language Leader programme, where students can develop leadership and teaching experience by planning and delivering lessons in a foreign language.

New GCSE Curriculum since September 2016 [first exams 2018]

Our students start developing speaking, listening, reading and writing skills to prepare them for the GCSE and beyond right from day one of Year 7. The topics of the new curriculum are as follows:

  • Me, my family & friends
  • Technology in everyday life
  • Free time activities
  • Customs and festivals of Spanish/French speaking countries
  • Home, town, neighbourhood & region
  • Social issues
  • Global issues
  • Travel & tourism
  • My studies
  • Life at school / college
  • Education post-16
  • Career choices & ambitions

The new GCSE has no Controlled Assessments. Instead, students will sit 4 exams:

  • Paper 1 (Listening) 25%
  • Paper 2 (Speaking) 25%
  • Paper 3 (Reading) 25%
  • Paper 4 (Writing) 25%

Please note that Paper 3 involves translating from Spanish / French into English, and Paper 4 includes a question requiring students to translate from English into Spanish / French.
