KS3 Maths

The KS3 syllabus is designed to ensure all students can achieve the standard set out in the Governments September 2013 paper (a copy can be found in this section of the website): Mathematics programmes of study: Key stage 3 national curriculum in England

We aim to provide a high-quality mathematics education that provides a foundation for understanding the world, the ability to reason mathematically, an appreciation of the beauty and power of mathematics, and a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about the subject.


Consistent with the national curriculum for mathematics our aims are to ensure that all pupils:

  • Become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that pupils develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
  • Reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing relationships and generalisations, and developing an argument, justification or proof using mathematical language.
  • Can solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.

The course will recognise that mathematics is an interconnected subject in which pupils need to be able to move fluently between representations of mathematical ideas. The programme of study for key stage 3 is organised into apparently distinct domains, but pupils will build on key stage 2 and connections across mathematical ideas to develop fluency, mathematical reasoning and competence in solving increasingly sophisticated problems. They should also apply their mathematical knowledge in science, geography, computing and other subjects.

Decisions about progression will be based on the security of pupils’ understanding and their readiness to progress to the next stage. Pupils who grasp concepts rapidly will be challenged through rich and sophisticated problems before any acceleration through new content in preparation for key stage 4. Those who are not sufficiently fluent will consolidate their understanding, including through additional practice, before moving on. Calculators will be used but not as a substitute for good written and mental arithmetic.

Overview of the programme of study

The programme of study aims to build on key stage 2 and then each year build on the syllabus covered from the year before and introduce appropriate new areas of study to ensure all parts of the mathematics national curriculum are covered prior to KS4.

The contents are split by each year group and then in half termly areas of study:

  • Year 7 – Page 3 to 9
  • Year 8 – Page 10 to 16
  • Year 9 – Page 17 to 23

KS4 Maths

At the end of Year 11 pupils will leave Stanchester Academy with the qualifications and skills needed to set them on the right footing for their chosen path in either employment or further education. We know how important Mathematics is, so we aim to prepare our students in the best way possible.

New GCSE Curriculum since September 2015

Mathematics is a core subject, so it is compulsory to study it throughout Years 10 and 11. Most employers and post 16 courses will expect you to have some kind of qualification in Maths. The aim is to provide a course which is relevant to everyday needs, further study in mathematics and other related subjects, and future employment. All students will start their GCSE course in Year 9 and will follow the 2 year Edexcel (1MA1) course in Mathematics. This course meets the new curriculum requirements and will be the first to be graded from 1 to 9.

Reasons for studying this subject

The qualification encourages students to develop confidence in and a positive attitude towards mathematics, and to recognise its importance in their own lives and to society. It also prepares students to make informed decisions about further learning opportunities and career choices.

What you will be studying

Students will develop knowledge, skills and understanding of mathematical methods and concepts, including: number, ratio and proportion, algebra, geometry, measures, statistics and probability. Students will use their knowledge and understanding to make connections between mathematical concepts and apply them to real-life situations.

The aims and objectives of the qualification are to enable students to:

  • Develop knowledge, skills and understanding of mathematical methods and concepts.
  • Acquire, select and apply mathematical techniques to solve problems.
  • Reason mathematically, make deductions and inferences, and draw conclusions.
  • Comprehend, interpret and communicate mathematical information in a variety of forms appropriate to the information and context.

All students are expected to bring mathematical equipment, including a scientific calculator, to lessons. Much of the work in class is dependent on their use and students who continually fail to bring the right equipment will put themselves at a disadvantage.

How you will be assessed

Mathematics is a linear course and will be examined by three terminal papers at the end of year 11. It is offered at two different tiers, Higher (Grades 4 to 9) and Foundation (Grades 1 to 5). Each paper carries an equal weighting towards the final grade in each tier.

Students will follow a programme of study that is appropriate to their ability and allows them to achieve at least their target grade. Movement between groups is allowed but any final set movements will be made early in Year 11.


In support of our More Able learners, each lesson is designed to stretch and challenge their thinking in a variety of ways. Lessons are tailored to our student’s needs, as well as providing stretch opportunities through the Achieving Excellence programme and other enrichment. Providing the best possible opportunities in lesson aim to develop in-depth mathematical thinking and criticality, ensure exam success, and promote the continuation of Mathematics into KS5.
