Sickness

If your child is absent for any reason, please phone the Student Support Receptionist, Mrs Hodges, on 01935 827201.  Please ensure you provide your childs name, Tutor Group and the nature of the illness.

Mrs Hodges is also be in charge of co-ordinating medical support in school. Please contact her to discuss any welfare/medication issues.

If a student feels unwell during the school day they will be issued with a ‘pink slip’ and sent to the Student Office who will determine if the student can return to class or whether the student needs to be collected from school. It is important that we have the correct contact details for parents/carers on our computer system. Please advise the school office of any changes to contact phone numbers.

Medical Appointments

If your child has a medical appointment during the school day, please ensure a note is brought into school in the morning. Your child should sign out of school when leaving and sign in on his/her return at the Student Office. You should collect your child from the main school office.

Updated Absence During the School Term

All schools are now unable to authorise any requests for absence relating to holidays in term time.  This has been brought about by an amendment to the Education (Pupil Registration) (England) Regulations 2006 which has removed reference to holidays and the ten day period.

These changes reinforce the government’s view that every minute of every school day is vital and that students should only be granted authorised absence by the school, in exceptional circumstances e.g. illness, exclusions, or due to other unavoidable causes.

As an Academy we have already been following this policy and we will continue not to authorise any requests for absence in term time unless there are exceptional circumstances.  Should you wish to apply for any term time absence, please ensure you complete the exceptional leave form which can be found below.

I would also like to inform you about a change to the Local Authority’s Penalty Notice Code of Conduct. Schools can now apply for Penalty Notices and Warning Penalty Notices for unauthorised absence where there are 10 or more unauthorised absences in a 12 week period. Penalties may be requested and served to each parent/carer per child:

  • where the pupil’s absence, perhaps within a rolling academic year, has not been authorised by the school.
  • where parents allow their child to be present in a public place during school hours without reasonable justification during the first five days of a fixed period or permanent exclusion.
  • where term-time leave of absence has not been authorised (authorised leave of absence to take family holidays can only be granted by the school in exceptional circumstances).

This new code of conduct is in line with the authority’s current policies on improving attendance and the Academy will request and serve Penalty Notices where appropriate. The penalty is £60 if paid within 21 days or £120 if paid after 21 days but within 28 days. The fine is charged to both parents.

I hope that you will support the Academy in its efforts to improve attendance by ensuring your child attends every day.  If you have any questions about this policy then please contact your child’s Head of Year in the first instance.
