Raising the Participation Age (RPA)
Young people who left year 11 in summer 2014 or later must continue in learning (education or training) until at least their 18th Birthday.
Staying in learning doesn’t mean you have to stay in school, there are a number of options you can choose:
- Full-time education e.g. going to study at a college or sixth form
- An apprenticeship or traineeship
- Part-time education, but must be alongside employment, self-employment or volunteering that is for 20 hours or more per week

Somerset Learning Guide Your Future – Choices for 16-19 year olds
Laing O Rourke Procurement School and College Leaver Programme
The School & College Leaver programme combines studying for an accredited qualification with real on-the-job experience. The programme will provide a fully funded accredited day release HNC and/or degree in Business or Commercial Management, for up to five years, leading to Professional membership of the Chartered Institute of Procurement and Supply. The successful applicants will work alongside experienced Laing O’Rourke professionals on the Hinkley Point C project, and attend college / university at the same time. Throughout, you’ll learn about commercial processes and planning to industry standards.
Laing O’Rourke are looking to fill two opportunities – they expect one to be based at the construction complex at Hinkley Point, near Bridgwater, with the other role based at their offices in Bristol. Ideally, candidates will be meticulous and methodical, process driven and be interested in a career in Procurement. They will hold, or aspire to gain, 280 UCAS points, and ideally should live in the South West or Bristol areas
Applications must be received by Friday 17th June, interviews will take place during June and the role will start in September 2016.
EDF Energy Smart Metering Apprenticeship
Come 2020 every home in the UK will need to be fitted with a Smart Meter. The idea is to help customers understand how they use their energy, so they can be smarter about energy efficiency and feel better about saving money too.
Our 54-week structured programme is designed to combine practical, classroom and field activity so that you’ll have the confidence and skills to one day fit smart meters by yourself. And as you learn, you’ll also get paid, and if you apply yourself, we’ll give you a permanent job at the end of it all. It’s an apprenticeship that’s going to make a big impact to the communities you work in. That’s got to be worth getting out of bed for in the morning.

Hinkley Point C (HPC) will be the first in a new generation of nuclear power stations in the UK. Construction and all supporting activities will be carried out by a large and diverse supply chain overseen by a project team. The Commercial function within the HPC Project Team is responsible for the placement and management of all of the contracts required to construct and commission the plant. This includes pre-contract procurement activities; managing tendering processes; contract negotiations and subsequent post contract commercial management.
The HPC Commercial Apprenticeship Programme will instil all the qualities and skills required to kick-start your career as a commercial professional with EDF Energy and the HPC project. You will spend 5 years learning from experts as part of the apprenticeship and, as well as getting valuable real world experience, you will study for a university level qualification. You can expect on-the-job training, classroom learning and the kind of practical experience you simply can’t get on a university campus. Real work, earning real money, with real career prospects. During the apprenticeship you’ll also be working towards attaining membership of a professional body, which demonstrates to the supply chain and peers that you work to the highest professional and ethical standards. With our support you’ll study for a Construction and the Built Environment HND at Bridgwater College and then a Construction and Quantity Surveying Degree at University of the West of England (UWE).
During the apprenticeship you will work in our central Bristol office, with opportunities to work at other EDF Energy NNB locations and with supply chain partners. Block and day release training will be at Bridgwater College (years 1 and 2) and the University West of England (years 3-5).
