Drama & Film Studies
Drama - KS3
Throughout Years 7, 8 & 9 in Drama, students study a range of topics, using these as a vehicle to acquire skills both subject specific and also, transferable for use in the real world. Drama is key in the post-pandemic world for re-engaging young people in key inter-personal and intra-personal skills, ensuring they have key skills such as: Collaboration, Communication, Creativity, Empathy, Reflection and Resilience.
Students will study a range of units which give them the opportunity to also develop key theatre skills, building on prior learning through a sequenced curricula, and ensuring that by the end of Year 9 they have had a diverse learning experience in KS3 Drama, as well as also preparing those taking the subject at KS4.
In addition to this, there are a variety of clubs on offer to supplement the Drama offer here at Stanchester, as well as trips, workshops and production opportunities.
Drama - KS4
At KS4, students are offered the opportunity to build on their work from KS3, giving them the opportunity to focus on their experience as both performer and/or designer and further developing their theatrical artistry as well as their transferable real-world skills.
For the AQA GCSE Drama course, students are introduced to more written elements of the course, with a specific focus on the Describe, Analyse and Evaluate format in both their written examination and also their NEA. Students also have the opportunity to perform or design for both devised and scripted exam pieces.
There is an increase in opportunities for theatre visits, practitioner workshops and additional rehearsal time with an expectation that students are more self-led, building a sense of aspiration and independence. In addition, students are also offered the opportunity to be involved in the co-curricular cultural offer, as well as specific GCSE Drama-only opportunities such as assisting to lead the Drama Club, and be Assistant Directors for Productions.
Film Studies – KS4
In Film Studies, students are offered the opportunity to explore the role that visual media plays in contemporary society. Students will develop both their analytical and creative skills, exploring a range of films from different cultures. They will develop an understanding of key cinematic tropes and specialist terminology, as well as develop their love of film.
Alongside this we will also have subject-based trips to studios, film screenings and students will also assist in the running of our weekly Film Club and contribute to our Film Festivals.
