Reading for Pleasure
At Stanchester, we recognise the power of Reading for Pleasure and developing pupils into lifelong readers. All KS3 pupils have 2-3 Reading for Pleasure sessions during their morning tutor time in which they read a book as a group from the selection below. These sessions are designed to give students the opportunity to spend time reading a shared class text, and texts are selected by class discussion and democratic vote.
Our Reading for Pleasure curriculum is both a window and a mirror: each option is carefully selected to allow students to hold a mirror up to their own selves through the rich and wonderful texts that we read, while also reflecting upon their own thoughts, feelings, and place within the world. Thus, these texts become a window out into the world of wider human experiences, different customs and beliefs as well as new and enriching knowledge which will only unlock more windows and doors for them in the future.
